You’ve decided to try and live a healthier life and take control of your diet , but you just can’t resist soda. In your mind, you rationalize the decision and decide that you can keep drinking it as long as you switch to diet soda instead. It’s millions people choice every year, as the clever marketing departments of large soda companies convince us that switching to diet is a perfectly healthy alternative.

These claims are simply untrue! Most soda manufacturers , to replace sugar use an artificial sweetener, called aspartame. This chemical is linked to an increased likelihood of heart disease , new study carried out by the University of Iowa, has shown .
These claims are simply untrue! Most soda manufacturers , to replace sugar use an artificial sweetener, called aspartame. This chemical is linked to an increased likelihood of heart disease , new study carried out by the University of Iowa, has shown .
One of the most comprehensive of its type with nearly 60,000 women participating over nine years was the study, headed up by Dr. Ankur Vyas, . The research found that participants who drank two or more cans of diet soda a day were 30% more likely to have a cardiovascular event (e.g. heart attack) and 50% more likely to die of a heart-related disease than someone who drank none was known as the Women’s Health Initiative Observational Study.
Vyas said ‘This is one of the largest studies on this topic, and our findings are consistent with some previous data, especially those linking diet drinks to the metabolic syndrome’ . One in five people in the United States consume diet drinks on a daily basis, the results could prove to be hugely significant to overall public health.
By the research team the 59,614 participants were split into four groups : two or more diet drinks a day, five to seven diet drinks per week, one to four diet drinks per week, and zero to three diet drinks per month.
After nearly nine years the health records of each woman was analyzed and the results were that congestive heart failure, heart attack, coronary revascularization procedure, coronary heart disease, ischemic stroke, peripheral arterial disease, and cardiovascular death, occurred in 8.5% of the women consuming two or more diet drinks a day compared to 6.9% in the five-to-seven diet drinks per week group; 6.8% in the one-to-four drinks per week group; and 7.2% in the zero-to-three per month group.
The results, on the surface, didn’t appear to fit the hypothesis that aspartame was one of the leading causes of heart disease. However, the records showed that alongside the slightly higher rate of heart-related health issues, the women in the two or more a day group were, on average, significantly younger than the women in the other groups, meaning the diet sodas were causing health issues at an accelerated rate. The women in this group also had the rate of diabetes, highest average blood pressure , the highest average BMIs .
Despite the scale of the study, no official conclusion can be drawn but the initial signs are worrying. Vyas explained ‘Based on these and other findings we have a responsibility to do more research to see what is going on and further define the relationship’ . ‘This could have major public health implications.’
Since the publication of the University of Iowa’s results, several more research projects have been commissioned in order to deduce the scale of the issues that aspartame can cause. The advice is to cut out soda drinks from your daily life and even if you do occasionally indulge; regular soda is actually better for you than the diet variety.
Making diet soda appear as a healthy alternative is further proof that many large companies are far more concerned with lining their pockets than benefiting their consumers.Make sure you know exactly what you are putting into your body when it comes to the things you eat and drink.

Scientists warn that heart-attack symptoms appear right before the myocardial infarction occurs. A heart attack is sudden and occurs without a warning, which is why it is one of the deadliest health conditions. However, it sure is possible to detect any subtle clues to an upcoming cardiac problem even a month before the attack happens.
A heart attack occurs when the coronary artery is burdened with plague buildup. This causes blood supply loss and eventually the heart attack. In the event of a heart attack, tissues die as a result of insufficient blood flow and the patient goes through a severe pain and crushing pressure.
If no medical person can prevent the heart attack at the moment, the death of tissues can be fatal. In this article, you can read more about the symptoms that may indicate an impending heart attack even up to a month before it actually happens.
1. Excessive fatigue
Coronary artery narrowing affects the amount of blood your heart receives, and the heart muscle has to work more than normal. This explains the excessive tiredness.
2. Shortness of breath
If you cannot catch a breath as you normally do, you are probably at a higher risk of a heart attack. When heart receives less blood, less oxygen is carried to lungs which is why you cannot breathe properly. Cardiovascular and respiratory systems work in a synergy, so this incidence may be a sign of a heart attack.
3. Weakness
Poor blood flow means that your body lacks oxygen, and you may feel weak. This happens because artery narrowing affects blood circulation and muscles do not get enough blood.
4. Dizziness and/or cold sweat
Unusual cold sweats and dizziness are a common sign of heart attacks. Improper cardiac circulation reduces the amount of blood that reaches the brain, which is why you deal with clamminess and dizziness, especially when a person gets up suddenly.
5. Discomfort in chest
Insufficient amount of oxygen in the heart muscle causes discomfort in the chest. Pain increases gradually until the heart attack actually occurs.
What can you do?
If you notice any of these symptoms or a combination of few, consult your doctor immediately. These signs often indicate a heart attack, so reacting to these symptoms is the best prevention.
Women are noticed to show more subtle symptoms, and once they are discovered it may be too late. Women should do a complete check-up regularly to avoid any severe consequence.
Do testings every time you feel strange or notice that there is something weird going inside your body, especially if there is a family member who has had a heart disease. In some cases, people are treated for anxiety, but actually, it turned out to be a heart attack.

Heart disease has become quite a problem in the US today. Hypertension stretches blood vessels and artery walls. Unfortunately, it increases cholesterol levels as well.
High cholesterol is a major contributor to the occurrence of heart disease, because fats from the food you eat tends to accumulate in the lining of the blood vessels.
These fatty deposits form an atheroma, which is sort of a deposit. A layer of deposit forms on top of the atheroma. The deposit triggers an inflammation in the blood vessel wall.
The plaque is actually a ticking bomb, because it poses a threat of sudden rupture.
The body is designed to repair tiny ruptures by producing life-threatening blood clots. But, there is a great possibility that these clot may restrict the artery or flow down the artery and block it at its narrowest spot. Minor plaque also increases the risk of sudden heart attack.
You can control your LDL levels in several ways. First, introduce some healthy dietary habits. Eat more foods that are low in fat and high in fiber. Make sure your food provides enough antioxidants.
Raisins are low-fat food, and they are abundant in antioxidants and fiber. These have shown to prevent and reduce the accumulation of bad cholesterol, and thus protect the blood vessels.
Try this juice recipe to unclog arteries and prevent heart disease
Ingredients:
- 2 tsp. ginger, grated
- 1 cup raisins, washed and cleaned
- 4 tsp. green tea
- 1l purified water
- 2 tbsp. honey
Preparation:
- Put your both raisins and water in a pot. Turn the heat on and cook on low for 10 minutes.
- Take the pot off the heat, and add in your green tea, honey and 2 teaspoons of grated ginger.
- Put the lid on again and wrap the pot using a woolen cloth. Let the mixture rest overnight for at least 8 hours. Strain it next morning.
- Drink 150-200ml of the juice twice a day, before your meals.
Raisins are packed with soluble and insoluble fiber, potassium and antioxidants. These will benefit your heart health. Fiber also promotes the excretion of bile from the system, and aids in lowering cholesterol levels.

A sad story of a young girl’s death in Macau has spread on the internet like wildfire. What happened was the girl started bleeding from several parts on her body and died during the night. According to the autopsy results, her death was due to arsenic poisoning. Then, a more important question arose – how did arsenic get into her body? The autopsy report was further investigated by a professor from a renowned medical school. After autopsying the girl’s stomach, the doctor shed new light on the case. The case was neither suicide, nor homicide.

The cause of death was linked to some dietary habits the girl had. Namely, she had been taking vitamin C supplements and the night before she died, she ate a lot of shrimps. According to earlier research by scientists from the University of Chicago, shrimp as well as soft shell foods contains high amounts of five potassium arsenic compounds. Although this food is not toxic for the body, when combined with vitamin C, it changes its chemical structure and becomes poisoning. To be more specific, it creates chemical reaction in combination with vitamin C converting the original non-toxic five potassium arsenic (i.e. arsenic anhydride, also known as arsenic pentoxide), into a toxic three potassium arsenic (ie arsenic anhydride), also known as arsenic trioxide!
According to health experts, arsenic poisoning can lead to life-threatening issues such as paralysis of capillaries, lobule central necrosis, heart, liver, kidney, intestine congestion, epithelial cell necrosis, and telangiectasia. Arsenic poisoning can also result in bleeding. That’s why you should never eat shrimps when taking vitamin C supplements!

In the United States of America stroke is the 4th leading cause of adult handicap.
It occurs as a result of when blood circulation to the brain is hindered.
Stroke can be categorised into two;
1. Ischemic and
2. Hemorrhagic strokes
The ischemic strokes are more common and they usually occur when there is a constriction to the canals of the brain, this causes low blood flow to the brain.
Hemorrhagic strokes are not as common as ischemic strokes but are no less serious, they are caused by hemorrhaging psychological.
Knowing what the symptoms of stroke are and immediately seeking medical assistance can go a long way in preventing major brain damage, handicap and even death.
While it is important to note that symptoms may vary from person to person, there are however some symptoms that are prevalent and these include;
- Numbness of your face, legs or arms, usually on one side of your body.
- Loss of mobility, control and balance.
- Difficulty in understanding what is being said to you, as well as in communicating with others.
Master The F.A.S.T Ways To Recognising The Onset Of A Stroke
F.A.S.T is an acronym for Face, Arms, Speech and Time.
Understanding this will help you quickly detect possible symptoms of stroke before it occurs.
- F for Face: Check if one side of a person’s face sags when you tell the person to smile.
- A for Arms: If the persons arms drifts downwards when you tell him to raise both his arms, then it could be a sign of stroke.
- S for Speech: Check for odd or slurry speech, when you ask the person to say a common phrase such as “all is well, that ends well”.
- T for Time: Time is of the essence and you should call the paramedics immediately you observe any of the signs indicated.
You should note these other symptoms as well;
- Vision problems either with one eye or both.
- Paralysis
- Feeling like a failure or disappointed for no obvious reason.
Stroke can occur without warning so once you notice any of the symptoms seek medical help immediately.
Don’t try to drive yourself to a hospital or seek the help of family members or friends to take you to the clinic, just call for an ambulance immediately and the paramedics know what to do to stabilise you while conveying you to a hospital.
You could also have transient ischemic assaults (TIAs). When the symptoms occur for some minutes then disappear. Do not overlook these symptoms and seek medical help immediately.
Difference Between Stroke And Migraine
You could confuse migraines with TIA symptoms or vice-versa, you should always remember that;
- TIAs are sudden and unexpected, but headaches and migraines occur gradually.
- At times migraines can give positive symptoms as well as added stimuli, like seeing zigzag shapes and flashing lights. In the case of TIA you have deteriorating symptoms like loss of your lower limb power, hearing and vision.
What Are The Risk Factors?
Stroke comes without warning, that’s why it’s called the “sudden death” ailment.
However, you are more prone to developing stroke if you…
- are aged 55 or older
- have high blood pressure
- are a cigarette smoker
- have diabetes
- have heart and blood problems
- have a genetic disorder or imbalance
- have aesthetic disruptions and migraines with mood swings
Health Tips To Help Avoid Stroke
- Stop smoking
- Monitor your blood pressure regularly
- Have a healthy dietary plan, rich in whole grains, vegetables and fruits
- Exercise regularly and maintain a healthy body weight index.

The Chinese have been using hawthorn in fermented drinks for years. In fact, its remains were found by archaeologists in bowls that were more than 9,000 years old. So far, people in Europe, Asia, North America, and the Mediterranean use hawthorn and it has since spread all over the world. While it is called hawthorn, there are many other aliases for this powerful herb such as white thorn, sharp thorn, and haw to name a few.

Hawthorn has found to be very beneficial to the heart because of an active ingredient in it that acts as an antioxidant. There is also trimethylamine which is an essential oil. It not only contains essential oils but also fructose, glycosides, tannins, saponin, salt of phosphoric acid, sodium, calcium, and potassium.
